Li Yaoyun, China's greatest chef, will visit Hong Kong next month to help judge the 2002 Best of the Best Culinary Awards organised by the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB). Chef Li, one of the most renowned chefs in Mainland China and the co-founder of Shanghai's famous Mo's cuisine, holds the record for preparing and jointing a duck in just two and a half minutes.

In addition to his participation on the judging panel for the Best of the Best Culinary Awards, Chef Li has agreed to share his cooking tips and unique views on Chinese cuisine as part of his week-long visit to the SAR.

A gourmet of Chinese food, he will be tasting signature dishes at a number of Hong Kong restaurants. He will also demonstrate ways of using Lee Kum Kee sauces to create new dishes specially for Hong Kong.

Chef Li is our culinary consultant," said Eddy Lee, chairman of Lee Kum Kee Co. Ltd. "We are delighted that he accepted the Hong Kong Tourism Board's invitation to join the judges for the Best of the Best Culinary Award and share his insights into Chinese cuisine.

Chef Li is one of the greatest chefs of our generation and his goal, like that of Lee Kum Kee, is to promote Chinese cuisine to the rest of the world. Will he find that Hong Kong's Peking, Shanghainese and Hangzhou restaurants are as 'authentic' as they claim? Hong Kong's food lovers might be in for a surprise."

As the chairman of the China Famous Chef Federation and International Judge of World Chef Association, Chef Li specialises in the cuisine of Sichuan and Yangzhou.

In 1972, he joined the renowned Yangzhou Restaurant in Shanghai. Working closely with the Mo brothers he helped to develop a new style of Yangzhou cuisine and has created many innovative dishes for which the city has become famous.

Chef Li has received numerous awards, both locally and internationally. In 1988, he took a team of chefs to Frankfurt to participate in the 17th World Olympic Cooking Contest. The team achieved outstanding results, netting seven gold, one silver and one bronze medals. Chef Li has been invited to showcase his cooking techniques throughout America, Europe and Asia.

Part of HKTB's City of Life: Hong Kong Is It! campaign, the Best of the Best Culinary Awards are designed to identify Hong Kong's classic dishes and strengthen the city's image and reputation as a "gourmet paradise". Lee Kum Kee is the official sauce supplier for this campaign.
